For those that are replacing a VCR and want a, a DVD recorder/VHS VCR combo is a flexible option(as long as they are available). You can use these units to play DVDs and VHS tapes, as well as record or copy homemade recordings (such as camcorder tapes, TV recordings, etc). However, keep in mind that DVD recorder/VCR combos cannot be used to copy commercially made DVD movies to VHS or commercially made VHS movies to DVD, due to copy-protection. IMPORTANT NOTE: In 2016, Funai, the last maker of VCRs and supplier to other VCR and DVD/VCR combo manufacturers. As a result, other manufacturers are only offering new DVD Recorder/VCR Combos as long as supplies last as their production slows down. So, as of 2018, whatever new units are left in the pipeline is what will be available going forward. This also means that, at some point, the units listed below may only be available on clearance at local retailers or Amazon, or used from third-party sources, such as eBay.
However, there is another cautionary note. Since supply is shrinking, prices of remaining units (some of which are models that could be almost a decade old), whether new and used, are getting very expensive, sometimes as much as two to three times higher than their original selling prices. The following list spotlights the best options to consider, if available (some may only be available on an intermittent basis). On the other hand, although DVD recorder/VCR combos are all but gone, there are still a limited number of newer (some of which include Hard drive recording options as well) that are available.

Setting the timer is a little complicated until you get used to it but I can set it in just a few minutes now. You do have to finalize recorded DVD's for them to play in any other players but they will play in the same model without being finalized so that was also my reason for a duplicate model. That way I can tape a show, watch it in the other unit and still be able to add more to it later since I don't have to finalize the dvd to use between the same units. These units will also record on both -R & +R disks so you can used most any media with them. Overall a very good product which is why I now own 3 of them. I rated is a 4 out of 5 only due to the timer being a little hard to set.

I purchased this combo because the first Magnavox VCR I bought in 1985 lasted almost 20 years! I had a problem with setup so I called Magnavox tech support, spoke to a nice man, hung up, followed his directions, and the machine didn't work. I called back about an hour later, and talked with the rudest tech support person I have ever talked to.
She was disrespectful, accused me of not following her directions, and downright mean! I followed her directions and the machine still wouldn't work. And, incidentally, her directions were just the opposite of what the previous tech had told me to do. I couldn't get the box packed and back to Walmart fast enough! Within an hour of hanging up with the rude technician, I had returned the item to Walmart!
I am going to locally purchase a similar product made by Toshiba this weekend. The online ordering process and return at the store went smoothly, but tech support at Magnavox negated any positive aspects of the product. We are very pleased with this product. In fact we have an older model Magnavox in the bedroom, which we purchased a couple years ago and wanted to try and find a newer one for the living room, but were having problems finding one with a build-in tuner. Since we are strictly on cable with a coax cable and no additional boxes we did not want to have to purchase additional equipment. Fortunately WalMart had what we needed.
The setup is very easy to do, it records and copies perfectly and I would highly recommend this item to others who want a fairly uncomplicated product. We are pleased with a easy of operation and since we record numerous TV shows each day, on both recorders we like the fact that we can watch the DVD - or + rewrite on either machine without having to finalize, thus making them reusable over and over again, by formatting after each use. I have also been pleased at the ease of dubbing my VHS tapes over to DVD's. The remote on this newer model is much larger than on the older model which makes it earier to use, but the light grey printing under the keys leaves a lot to be desired.
I do find the clock keeps perfect time when manually set. Using DVD+RW disks, and VHS tapes, it records digital and analog channels (from Cable) perfectly onto disk or tape, and will easily copy from one to the other. The DVD's are easy to edit, and play on other DVD players. We always record at the 6-hour speed. During setup, make sure to look at ALL the options and choose what you want.
Learning to use it was pretty straightforward, but keep the manual close by for the first few days. Phone support quickly helped me figure out which setting I'd missed, when the clock was resetting itself to the wrong hour. The digital / analog tuner works fine. Programming advance recordings is as easy as with a good VCR. The print on the remote is gray on a dark background, and is small and hard to read. I bought this machine to replace a VCR/DVD Combo unit with a failed VCR recorder.
As a VCR, it performs very well, but what I have fallen in love with is the DVD recorder. Even using the longer play speeds, it makes a very good quality recording from cable and On-Demand programs. The only drawback is that there is no HD input, but I knew that when I bought it. Therefore recordings of HD programming will be slightly off format-wise, but this is a very minor issue and as stated earlier, the picture and sound quality are excellent. The remote is reasonably laid out and after learning the functions it is quite simple to use and I've found it to be very responsive as well. Be sure to read the manual thoroughly and test your recordings using a DVD+RW disc to get the hang of it. Overall, the quality of the machine and the speed with which it was shipped left me very pleased.
The lack of an HD input is the only minor quibble which would have made it a solid 5 stars. At this price, you can't beat the value. These are currently available in Wal-Mart stores as well. I have had this type of product before, so figuring out how to use was not difficult, I purchased it because my old one on the vhs side was not working correctly (over-worked) also I do not have a cable box and this works great to watch one channel and record another. Cable does not give you that option. As for customer services I would give it a very HIGH rating.
Magnavox
Helped me with 'silly' questions even at 11p.m. Est always polite and helped with the clock timing because of going from analog to digital. So no complaints.
I had a difficult time figuring out how to use install and use the machine. The customer service for Magnavox is the 'worst' I have ever come across. As a rule when a call comes in somebody takes a message with a promise of a call back. Twice I never received a call back in spite of waiting for 10 hours. Once I did receive a call back after waiting for six hours and I also got lucky and was able to reach a customer service rep. On one occasion although the information offered was not helpful.
I am at a point now where I am able to record DVDs but I am still not able to properly title the DVDs and use the chaptering options. I have reached this point more through trial and error than help from customer service.
After waiting for numerous hours I have given up contacting them. You will enjoy your machine if you can figure out how to get it all to work but if you need customer service be prepared for many hours of waiting and anticipation. The review on 3.15.10 by the 84 yr-old was what convinced me to buy the unit. What he wrote is true.
I had trouble in the beginning and I boxed it up to return it because I thought I had to buy more equipment. (You do if you have an old TV - an RF modulator - which is inexpensive) but you do not if you have a new TV. You need to read the comprehensive manual before you begin - it does do anything one would want - and more. But the customer service was the clincher for me to try again to make it work. THE EMPLOYEES ARE IN THE U.S. And their hours are 9am -12 midnight. For this reason I had to make sure that my review was done for anyone who wants a good, versatile product with exceptional customer service.
(Unheard these days.). With 10 years as a electronics tech then 10 years as a electronics instructor in the USMC, plus almost 20 years as a computer specialist for the federal govt., I have a basis for my opinion of this product. I had purchased a Panasonic first, but found the user manual to look like something designed for the space shuttle. Returned it and purchased this Magnavox. I bought this item to replace a similar, older, and well used Magnavox. The new machine has a few more bells and whistles, but to date has performed well. It is also user friendly.
Even the tuner works reasonably well in this recorder. I would highly recommend it. I was very pleased to find a product that efficiently does everything it claims to.
This device plays VHS and DVDs as well as records on both. I can burn a DVD from a VHS tape all in the same device or I can record on a VHS tape something from a DVD. This device also has a tuner so I can record to DVD or VHS from my TV, cable or satelite!
This is a versatile product and it's very simple to setup and use. The instructions are logical & I was able to use it right away. I couldn't be happier with the product!
